چکیده

Murray M. Humphries,* Stan Boutin, Donald W. Thomas, John D. Ryan, Colin Selman, Andrew G. McAdam, Dominique Berteaux and John R. Speakman Abstract There is renewed focus on the ecological determinants of animal metabolism and recent comparative analyses support the physiological expectation that the field metabolic rate (FMR) of homeotherms should increase with declining ambient temperature. However, sustained elevation of FMR during prolonged, seasonal cold could be prevented by intrinsic limits constraining FMR to some multiple of basal metabolic rate (BMR) or extrinsic limits on resource abundance. We analysed previous measures of mammalian FMR and BMR to establish the effect of ambient temperature on both traits and found no support for intrinsic limitation. We also measured the FMR of a northern population of red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) exposed to ambient temperatures much colder than all but one previous study of mammal FMR. These measurements revealed levels of energy expenditure that are, unexpectedly, among the lowest ever recorded in homeotherms and that actually decrease as it gets colder. Collectively, these results suggest the metabolic niche space of cold climate endotherms may be much larger than previously recognized.

Human Skeletal Muscle Mitochondrial Uncoupling Is Associated with Cold Induced Adaptive Thermogenesis

BACKGROUND Mild cold exposure and overfeeding are known to elevate energy expenditure in mammals, including humans. This process is called adaptive thermogenesis. In small animals, adaptive thermogenesis is mainly caused by mitochondrial uncoupling in brown adipose tissue and regulated via the sympathetic nervous system. In humans, skeletal muscle is a candidate tissue, known to account for a l...

Optimization for high level expression of cold and pH tolerant amylase in a newly isolated Pedobacter sp. through Response Surface Methodology

Amylase is one of the most widely used enzymes in the industry. Cold environments are the most ubiquitous environments in the world that have been occupied by cold tolerant microorganisms. The enzymes of these microorganisms have a wide range of applications in various areas of biotechnology. The aim of this study was to isolate cold-active amylase producing bacteria. A total of 64 cold-toleran...

The cold shoulder: free-ranging snowshoe hares maintain a low cost of living in cold climates

The hypothesis that cold air temperatures (Ta) constrain the metabolic diversity of high-latitude endotherms is based on the observation among birds and mammals that mean field metabolic rate (FMR) increases, whereas the variability of FMR decreases, from the warm tropics to the cold poles. However, there is a paucity of FMR measurements from above 608 latitude and below 0 8C. We measured the d...

Cold and hunger induce diurnality in a nocturnal mammal.

The mammalian circadian system synchronizes daily timing of activity and rest with the environmental light-dark cycle. Although the underlying molecular oscillatory mechanism is well studied, factors that influence phenotypic plasticity in daily activity patterns (temporal niche switching, chronotype) are presently unknown. Molecular evidence suggests that metabolism may influence the circadian...

Strength Characteristics of Clay Mixtures with Waste Materials in Freeze-Thaw Cycles

Waste tires, rubbers, plastic and steel materials, normally produced in every society, enter the environment and cause serious problems. These problems may, to some extent, be reduced by finding applications for them in engineering, for example, they can be used for geotechnical applications as backfill material and solving problems with low shear strength soils. Such materials may be subjected...
